Capital plans new bus routes to connect with suburbs

The capital’s bus service is continuing its expansion, with new suburban routes expected soon.

Since its launch in the summer of 2008, the bus service has grown from four city routes to 12, plus seven routes connecting the island with suburbs. A city service was launched in Al Ain last July.

The Department of Transport has awarded two contracts for 500 city and regional buses. A further 860 are expected to be added, allowing the service to expand to provide a comprehensive service in the emirate’s three regions, as well as routes linking these regions.

The bus service is part of the Government’s plan for a transport network that, over the next 20 years, will also include trams and a metro system.
