Dear Abu Dhabi Friends,
I want to open a discussion about the PARKING PROBLEM, it is a big problem, a daily issue, i am sure that everyone is suffering this everyday few times a day depends on the work timing, for me, I face this problem everyday after my work, at least 30 minute to find a proper place to park my car so i will not get ticket or get scratches, then at night many times I cancel going out just afraid to come back late and find no place to park.

Sometimes i park too far from my house, i have to walk 5 to 10 minutes (I know it is a good sport), if this is the situation now, what will happen after a couple of years, this problem exist mainly in Hamdan, tourist club, khalidya and electra.. do you know about any plans by the road authority to solve this serious problem, hope I can hear your thought and any solutions in mind...

Parking

scorp2x's picture

When DCIL originally came up with the Abu Dhabi masterplan they allowed for parking areas alongside each building. Subsequently the authorities allowed some people to build high rise properties on those parking lots.....particularly along the Corniche, Khalifa Street and Hamdan Street. Basically, greed created the current problem.

What's the solution? Apart from tearing buildings down there really isn't much they can do in some areas since the space just isn't available. In some places undergroundparking can be built but then you've got to force people to use them. The ones on Hamdan Street are empty most of the time, people don't want to pay AED 2 or 3 and they don't want to walk. They rather park outside their fancy office and block three other cars at the time....after all...it doesn't matter does it? THEY can wait right?

Proper city planning and adherence to that planning, re-education of drivers about HOW and WHERE to park, strict DAILY enforcement of the rules....not casually giving tickets in a particular area once every three months or so, car free areas, a decent tram type system, all of these are needed to correct the problem.

parking lots

There are 7 municipal parking lots in the city, mostly in the CBD. Considering everything they are cheap and save you a lot of hassle. Use them!

I agree with you, that greed created the problem, many buildings belongs to powerful people should been built with underground and 2 floor parking spaces, but that will reduce the space to be rent, also some apartments hotels like MANZEL have no parking for the guests, so they need to use other building spaces, I do not thing there are an early solutions they can do.

I know there are alot of

Cool's picture

I know there are alot of municipal parking crazycroat, but what can I do if non of them near by my place, do I have to park there then take taxi home, scorp, thank you for the nice reply, but do not you think also that giving tickets so often is not fair as well, as some people they just ran out of option, it is not fun to spend 1 hour looking for a parking space, if they will get strict about it they may do it in Hamadn and Electra around 7 to 8 PM, in this time many people they park and block other people cars,

Life is too short, live it with fun

The problem with constructing

crazycroat's picture

The problem with constructing parking lots in Abu Dhabi is that building lots are too small and cannot accommodate underground circulation and enough parking spaces underneath most buildings.

I agree that a lot of people don't have that many options. There are 3 main issues here:

1. Parking is free.
2. People park their cars and leave them in parking lots for years and don't use them.
3. Taxis park in the city and take up parking spots. They should be out of the residential areas.

Since parking is free, there is no interest for people to use municipal parkades.

I agree with scorp2x and Dhabi, Greed is the main reason, In sharjah same size buildings have underground and two floor parking spaces... so they can do it IF THEY WANT... also in my area there is one building full of taxi drivers so as crazycroat said they should force them to be out of the city, parking is free, true, but they announce they gonna apply paid parking but no one knows when..
The only solution for now is to come home early, park your car, and then if you want to go out so use taxi,

The sooner Abu Dhabi expands, the better.

There are plans to extend the city into the mainland. That will improve things a lot. Look at places like Al Muroor area- small apartment blocks, lots of parking, lots of trees, great facilities and infrastructure.

I want to move to Khalifa City!!
