Dhabi's picture

Abu Dhabi: Food safety measures in the emirate are now from 'farm to fork', as the agriculture department under Abu Dhabi Municipality is merging with Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA), a senior official told Gulf News.
The merger is in the process under a decree issued by President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The vision is to promote an internationally recognised food and agriculture organisation that contributes to the wellbeing of the community.
Observation
The public can expect better food safety measures, as the entire food chain from farms to the market comes under the constant observation of the authority, said Mohammad Jalal Al Reyaysa, Manager of Communication and Information Department at ADFCA.
Following the merger, the scientific committee of ADFCA has been reconstituted with experts in agricultural sector.
"The members of the committee are experts from various parts of the world. Earlier there were only food safety experts in the committee which proposes new initiatives and evaluates the performance of the authority," said Al Reyaysa.
The new committee held its first meeting recently, and discussed the new mission to develop a sustainable agriculture and food sector, that ensures the delivery of safe food to the public and protects the health of animals and plants, while promoting sound environmental practises. The official said the merger will pave the way for a lot of changes and new initiatives.
